Review: Hotel Central Luzern in Switzerland

Hotel Central Luzern was the perfect place to stay on my first solo trip!

Switzerland was my very first solo international trip, so I wanted to make everything as easy and safe as possible.

I needed a hotel that was close to the train station, within walking distance of all the main sights, and not on a busy street. Safety was a top priority, both in terms of the hotel itself and the surrounding area.

After lots of research, reading tons of online reviews, and comparing recommendations, I chose Hotel Central Luzern, a charming little boutique hotel with only 46 rooms. And honestly? I don’t think I could’ve picked a better place for my first solo adventure.

Location, Location, Location

The location was exactly what I wanted. Just two blocks from the Luzern train station, it made arriving from Zurich (a trip that took less than an hour) incredibly easy.

It’s tucked away on a quiet side street, so even though it’s central, it never felt noisy or chaotic.

Major attractions like Chapel Bridge, Old Town, and the lakefront were only about a 5-10 minute walk away.

I never once felt unsafe walking around, even in the early morning or evening.

First Impressions

The hotel is housed in a lovely old neoclassical building, which I immediately fell in love with.

The front desk area is small but welcoming, and I was greeted with warm smiles.

Communication was a breeze. Everyone spoke English, which was such a relief for me on my first solo trip abroad.

Check-in was quick and easy. I arrived a bit before my room was ready, but they happily held my luggage so I could grab a quick bite to eat. There’s a fantastic little bakery/café just around the corner (highly recommend!).

My Room: A single with space

When I came back, I got my key and took the elevator (yes, they have one, yay!) up to my room. Since it’s an old building, the layout includes some quirky little hallways, but I thought it added to the charm.

I booked a Single Noble Room, and I was honestly surprised by how spacious it felt. It had a separate little living area, a single bed (perfect for solo travel), and a TV on a swivel so I could watch it from the couch or the bed.

One thing that’s very different from the U.S. is that rooms in Europe are often based on occupancy. So, since I was traveling solo, I was able to book a smaller room and pay less. Win-win!

The design was modern and cozy, with large wall coverings featuring photos of Lucerne.

There were three windows. One in the living area, one above the bed, and one in the bathroom. All slightly angled with the roofline, so it felt like a skylight hybrid. So much natural light! I loved lying in bed and looking up at the stars.

There were thoughtful little touches throughout the room: lots of outlets, built-in reading lights, small shelves and nooks by the bed instead of a traditional nightstand.

The bathroom was big, with a tub/shower combo and plenty of counter space for toiletries.

Breakfast & Lounge Vibes

One of my favorite spaces in the hotel was the lounge area, which doubles as the breakfast room in the morning.

It had a large communal table in the center (great if you feel like being social) plus a few smaller tables and cozy upholstered seating on the sides.

Each morning, there was a beautiful spread of fresh breads and rolls, croissants, local cheeses, sliced meats, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, cereals, and jams…and bacon.

Now, about the bacon. I’ll be honest, it looked almost raw. I had to do a double take! But I learned that this is just the European style. It’s more like lightly cooked cured ham than the crispy bacon most of us expect in the U.S. Totally normal there, just a little surprising if you’re not used to it.

They also had one of those fancy coffee machines where you can make a cappuccino or espresso with the push of a button. Such a treat.

I loved sitting on the small balcony with my morning coffee, watching the city slowly wake up around me.

Thoughtful Touches

After hours, the main door to the hotel is locked, and you need your actual key (not a card!) to get in. I kind of loved that. It felt a little old-school in the best way and added to the feeling of being in a special little European hideaway.

A few times during my stay, I asked the front desk for restaurant recommendations. They were so kind and helpful. Once even making a reservation for me when the website was confusing. As a solo traveler, having that kind of support made a big difference.

Oh, there’s also a little honor fridge in the lounge where you can grab a beer or a glass of wine and leave a few francs in the jar.

Final Thoughts

Hotel Central Luzern checked every box: safe, quiet, walkable, charming, and full of thoughtful little details. I felt well taken care of.

If you’re a solo traveler heading to Lucerne, or just someone who appreciates a boutique hotel with personality, I’d absolutely recommend staying here.
