Many of Bangkok’s most celebrated destinations are easily accessible from the river. From the dazzling Grand Palace and Reclining Buddha to the towering spires of the Temple of Dawn and the chic shops at ICONSIAM, there’s no shortage of incredible stops along the river.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the must-see places for a one-day adventure in Bangkok, all centered around the Chao Phraya River and conveniently reachable by river taxi.

Top Sights Along the Chao Phraya River

There are literally dozens of things you could see along the Chao Phraya River but if you only have one day in Bangkok, you obviously can’t see everything. But by using the efficient river taxi system, you can easily see seven of the top attractions in Bangkok!

This itinerary will show you how to spend the perfect day hopping from pier to pier, making the most of your one-day visit while soaking in the best sights along the Chao Phraya River.

Morning: Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

Start your day at the Sathorn Pier (N1) and take the river taxi to Tha Tien Pier (N8), where Wat Pho, home to the famous Reclining Buddha, awaits.

• Getting There:  From the central Sathorn Pier (N1) take an ORANGE flag river taxi over to Tha Tien Pier (N8). You can also take a BLUE flag river taxi to Tha Chang Pier (N9) at The Grand Palace and walk about 15 minutes south to reach Wat Pho.

• Getting There: From Wat Pho, walk about 15 minutes north to reach the Grand Palace. You could also take the ORANGE flag river taxi to the Tha Chang Pier (N9), but it may just as quick to walk.
• Tips: Make sure to dress modestly, as there is a strict dress code requiring visitors to cover their shoulders and knees. You will also be required to remove your shoes before entering the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
• Time to Spend: Aim to spend about 2 hours exploring the palace and the temple complex.

Lunch Break: Refuel at Tha Maharaj Riverside Mall

After soaking in the splendor of the Grand Palace, head to Tha Maharaj, an open-air community space just a short walk or river taxi ride away. • Getting There: From The Grand Palace, walk about 10 minutes north to reach Tha Maharaj Riverside Mall. You could also take the BLUE flag river taxi to the Tha Maharaj Pier (M). The ORANGE flag taxi does not go to the Tha Maharaj pier.
• What to Eat: Try some classic Thai dishes like pad thai, tom yum goong (spicy shrimp soup), or som tam (papaya salad). If you’re not in the mood for local cuisine, there are also plenty of Western options available.
• Time to Spend: 1 hour should be enough to relax and recharge.

Hours: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

From Tha Maharaj, hop back on the river taxi and make your way to Wat Arun, located across the river at the Wat Arun Pier. Known as the “Temple of Dawn,” Wat Arun is one of the most stunning temples in Bangkok.

It’s a perfect place to unwind after a day of temple visits.

ICONSIAM also hosts a nightly light and water show along the riverfront, where fountains dance to music in a spectacular display. It’s a wonderful way to wind down your day, taking in the dazzling views of the river and Bangkok’s illuminated skyline.

• Getting There: Take the BLUE flag river taxi to ICONSIAM Pier (I).
• Time to Spend: Allocate around 1.5 to 2 hours here.

Cost: Free (500 THB for Ferris Wheel)

I didn’t go on it but the Asiatique Sky Ferris Wheel is supposed to have stunning views over the river and city, especially at night when the lights create a magical atmosphere!

• Getting There: From ICONSIAM, take the ICONSIAM shuttle boat or BLUE flag river taxi to Sathorn Pier (N1) and catch the free shuttle boat to Asiatique.
• Where to Eat: Choose from an array of riverside restaurants serving everything from Thai street food to international dishes. For a local treat, try pla pao (grilled fish) or som tam paired with a cold beer.
• Time to Spend: Plan to stay for 1.5 to 2 hours.

After you’ve had your fill for the day, head back to the Asiatique Pier (A) and take the free river shuttle back to the Sathorn Pier (N1). The free shuttle runs until 11:30 PM.

3. Use Google Maps: Walking directions are easily found on Google and Apple maps. You can even pull up the different pier names to find the river taxi schedules.
4. The Direction of the River Taxi: The river taxis use the piers for going in both directions. Before you get on, make sure the boat is going the right direction for your next stop.
5. Start Early: Bangkok’s attractions get crowded, especially the Grand Palace. Arriving early not only helps you beat the crowds but also the heat.
6. The Bangkok Airport (BKK) has luggage storage options available if you are wanting to do an abbreviated version of this as a way to spend a long layover in Bangkok.
